The Microneedling is a revolutionary cosmetic treatment more effective than traditional fractional laser. This procedure uses a series of needle punctures beneath the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s own wound healing process. The procedure can be performed using topical anesthetic and does not require any downtime afterward.
Microneedling improves the appearance of acne scars and wrinkles without lasers or other abrasive treatments. With age, the production of collagen and elastin naturally diminishes, which causes wrinkles, saggy skin and a hollowing effect. Through collagen induction therapy, the skin can be prompted to heal and repair itself. The treatment creates “micro injuries” to the skin. It promotes the skin’s natural healing response to produce more collagen and elastin. This treatment is used as an alternative to other intensive anti-aging procedures. By inducing the production of collagen and elastin the appearance of pores, acne scars, and wrinkles is minimized. More collagen means smoother, tighter and younger looking skin.
While microneedling can be used to replace facial treatments like traditional invasive plastic surgery, it can also be used as a supplement to existing procedures in order to increase their effectiveness. Microneedling treatment also increases effectiveness of topical cosmetic products such as anti-aging creams and serums. Cleared by the FDA and clinically proven to be safe and effective, microneedling is used to treat the following skin conditions:
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Burn scars
Unlike some laser skin tightening treatments, microneedling requires little downtime and can be safely used on all skin types.
The microneedling device is about the size of a felt-tip marker. Sterile disposable tips that ensure safety contain an array of 9, 11 or 12 steel micro-needles. Other micro-needling devices reuse the same needles, increasing the chance of contamination. During the microneedling procedure, the device is moved over the skin in the treatment area and the rapidly rotating needles create thousands of micro-punctures. Each of the tiny wounds triggers the body’s healing process, which produces new collagen to fill the micro-punctures.
Both the speed and puncture depth of the treatment are adjustable to enhance the results for individual patients. The number of treatments required depends on skin condition and the aggressiveness of each treatment. Most patients undergo from 4 to 6 treatments for optimal results.
Among the benefits of micro-needling compared to other, more invasive, collagen-inducing therapies is the shorter recovery time needed. Laser skin tightening treatments typically result in significant redness and swelling that lasts up to 4 days. There is some redness after a microneedling treatment and some swelling, but both side effects are less severe and dissipate after 2 days. Recovery following microneedling treatment is also less painful than after laser- or light-based therapy.
